A Meaningful Commemoration: The 2025 $2 Torres Strait Islander Flag Coloured Coin

The Royal Australian Mint has released a significant addition to Australia's decimal currency history. The 2025 $2 Uncirculated AlBr Coloured C-Mintmark coin marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander Flag being proclaimed an official Flag of Australia. It is a thoughtful tribute to cultural heritage, unity, and resilience.

Historical Significance

The Torres Strait Islander Flag was designed in 1992 by the late Bernard Namok from Thursday Island. It was officially recognised under the Flags Act 1953 by Governor-General Bill Hayden in July 1995. Over the past three decades, the flag has stood as a central symbol of identity, connection, and pride for Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This coin release acknowledges that thirty-year milestone on a national scale. Circulating art and commemorative legal tender offer accessible ways to share national stories across generations.

Detailed Design and Symbolism

Royal Australian Mint designer Elyssa Waterford developed the coin's design in collaboration with Torres Strait Islander communities. The central feature is the dhari (traditional dancer's headdress) alongside the five-pointed star. These elements rest at the heart of the coin, just as they do on the original flag.

The circular colour print mirrors the flag’s defining palette:

  • Deep green panels represent the land.

  • Blue represents the surrounding waters of the Torres Strait.

  • Black stripes symbolise the Torres Strait Islander people.

  • Crisp white highlights define the five-pointed star and the dhari.

Beneath the central colour application lies a relief pattern created by Erub Island artist Lavinia Ketchell. Inspired by traditional fishing traps and weave patterns, this artwork represents community gathering, resourcefulness, and deep connection to sea Country.

The obverse side of the coin features the official effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Daniel Thorne.

A Essential Piece for Collectors

Coloured two-dollar coins from the Royal Australian Mint remain among the most sought-after releases in Australian numismatics. The addition of the 'C' mintmark denotes its origin from the Mint in Canberra, adding further interest for collectors.

With a strictly limited mintage of 100,000 pieces, each coin is sealed in an illustrated presentation card. This keeps the uncirculated finish protected while providing context on the design history. Whether building a complete $2 collection or seeking a meaningful piece of contemporary Australian history, this coin is a valuable addition.
